Hartsville Memorial Recreational Trail

A bike trail ties in well with Hartsville’s Master Vision Plan and its benefits will enhance the community overall.   Recent studies show that the majority of population growth is taking place in walkable/bikeable communities.  We have the opportunity of leading the way for the PeeDee region.  An active recreational path would provide Hartsville with many benefits, including:

  • A safe cycling/walking path that will prevent tragic deaths and injuries such as what happened to Andy Kilpatrick and Patrick Sawyer.
  • Health benefits from an increase of cycling, running, and walking opportunities for residents.
  • A means of alternative transportation for residents to commute to and from downtown Hartsville and possibly to the Duke Energy campus.
  • Economic and tourism benefits from a family friendly bike path that connects to our many attractive venues in the greater Hartsville area which include: Lawton Park, Lake Prestwood, Black Creek, Kalmia Gardens and Lake Robinson.
  • Reinforcement of the greater Hartsville’s reputation as a progressive area with great quality of life and a preferred destination for the surrounding area.
  • Local business growth through development of trailside businesses and showcasing of community amenities while corporate recruiting.

The newly formed team for the development of the recreational path is working through the early planning stages. We will need to demonstrate community support for the project and raise funds to support the feasibility study.  Please consider donating to this exciting and worthy project.

Donations in support of the feasibility study may be made online here.

Recreational Path Location:

The recreational path is intended to take advantage of retired rail beds in the area.  Of prime interest is the rail bed along Golf Course Road.  The actual starting and stopping points could potentially change based on availability of land, and inclusion of trail heads.
